YouTube Community Guidelines Warnings Can Now Expire: How the 90-Day Training Works
A first Community Guidelines warning no longer has to stay forever. How per-policy warnings, the optional training and the 90-day expiry work — and how strikes follow.

Key takeaways
- A first violation usually means a warning, not a strike.
- Take the optional policy training and the warning expires after 90 days.
- Repeat the same policy inside that window and a strike can follow.
What changed
Starting August 29, 2023, Community Guidelines warnings can expire. Creators may get a warning for each policy area (for example spam or impersonation), and can optionally take a policy training so the warning expires after 90 days. Source: YouTube policy updates.
How the warning → strike path works
A first violation usually brings a warning, not a strike. Breaking the same policy again within the 90-day window after training can lead to another warning or a strike. Read YouTube's own explanation in Community Guidelines strike basics.
- Warning: content removed, no channel penalty yet.
- Strike 1: one-week freeze on uploading and posting.
- Strike 2 within 90 days: two-week freeze.
- Strike 3 within 90 days: channel termination.
Why per-policy matters
Because warnings are tied to a policy area, a warning for spam does not reset when you take training for something else. Know which policy your warning is about before you choose the training.
Step by step: what to do when you get a warning
- 1
Read the email and Studio notice
Note which policy area the warning is for and which video or post was removed.
- 2
Decide whether to appeal
If you believe the removal was a mistake, appeal from YouTube Studio. If not, move on to the training.
- 3
Take the policy training
Complete the optional training for that policy. The 90-day expiry clock starts after you finish it.
- 4
Audit similar videos
Check older uploads for the same issue and fix or privately unlist them before they are reported.

Common reasons creators get warnings
Spam and deceptive practices (misleading titles or thumbnails, repetitive comments, keyword stuffing) and impersonation are frequent ones for growing channels. Write honest packaging with the YouTube Title Generator and keep tags relevant with the YouTube Tags Generator.
Pro tip: Fan channels must clearly say they are not the original artist or creator in the channel name or handle — this is part of the impersonation policy.
Frequently asked questions
Do YouTube Community Guidelines warnings expire?
Yes. Since August 29, 2023, you can take an optional policy training and the warning expires 90 days later, as long as you do not break the same policy again in that time.
What happens if I break the same policy again?
The warning will not expire and you may receive a strike. Three strikes within 90 days leads to channel termination.
Does a warning affect monetization or reach?
A warning itself carries no upload freeze, but the removed content no longer earns or gets views. Strikes bring upload freezes of one or two weeks.
Can I get more than one warning?
Yes. Warnings are per policy area, so you could get one for spam and a separate one for another policy.
How can I avoid spam warnings on titles and tags?
Keep titles accurate and tags relevant. See our YouTube SEO guide and check competitors' tags with the Free YouTube Tag Extractor.
